 How to Write a Motivation Letter?

What is a motivation letter?

To be frank, a motivation letter is a letter describing what motivates you, like literally. Now in this article, I'll be talking with regards to a motivation letter you might be addressing to a UNIVERSITY, for admission or for a scholarship.

What is the format of a motivation letter?

There is no defined format for a motivation letter, unlike the normal letter we are taught to write at school. You just need to keep a couple of postulates in your mind:

#1 Correct grammar and spelling are required. Your motivation letter plays a major role in your application, and if you want a scholarship then everything has to be perfect. A suggestion to help you with grammar and spelling; download Grammarly, it is free.

#2 Divide your letter into paragraphs, ranging from 3 to 7 paragraphs.

#3 Address what is asked of you.

#4 Follow the normal 3-paragraph format:

* Introductory paragraph

*Main body

*Conclusion

What to write in a motivation letter?

You address the questions you have been asked by the admission council. Generally, they ask you to address such questions:

  • Why have I chosen to apply to this program?
  • What do I expect to gain from my studies?
  • Why does my academic and personal background make me a suitable candidate for this program and for this (any) University (potential for success, demonstrated qualities, and skills)?
  • Why is this (any) University a good choice for me as an individual?
Of course, these are just the general questions, they may ask you some other questions depending on the university you are applying to.

How to start a motivation letter?

Now, this part is prudent because this grasps the attention of the person reading your letter, it leaves an impression of who you are and you definitely don't want to bore them out. So a couple of ideas on how to start:

#1 Start with a belief

#2 Start with a story that might relate to the program you are applying to

#3 And remember to address the questions, they don't have to be addressed in the order they have been asked, shuffle them up and be creative.

#As an example, I am putting in a link of Koc University in Turkey, they have provided samples for motivational letters if you are applying to Medicine or Engineering, etc. This link will take you to the Admission requirements page, scroll down and you'll find the motivation letter samples

A couple of tips along the way;

*Stay within the word limit.

*Don't copy anything from the internet.

*Try to be as truthful and original as possible (organic ideas really set you aside).
